What is NatWest?

NatWest is a major UK-based retail and commercial bank that has increasingly integrated blockchain technology and digital asset strategies into its financial services. While not a standalone decentralized project with a native public cryptocurrency, NatWest operates significant blockchain initiatives such as the 'Digital Capital Markets' unit and participates in industry-wide projects like the 'Great British Tokenised Deposit' (GBTD) and Project Agorá, aimed at revolutionizing domestic and cross-border payments through tokenization.

How Does NatWest Work?

NatWest utilizes enterprise-grade blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) to streamline capital market activities, such as issuing and managing tokenized bonds. The bank employs Variable Recurring Payments (VRP) through Open Banking APIs to enable automated, non-sweeping transfers. On a broader scale, it collaborates with the Bank of England and other commercial banks to test tokenized deposits, which allow traditional currency to be represented on digital platforms to facilitate instant, rule-based programmable payments.

What Makes NatWest Unique?

NatWest is unique for being one of the first UK banks to offer non-sweeping VRP as a payment option for businesses, providing a secure alternative to direct debits and card payments. Additionally, its 'Digital Capital Markets' division focuses on digitally native assets—such as digital green bonds—which enable increased transparency and traceability for ESG objectives. Unlike many crypto-native projects, NatWest’s ecosystem is built on a hybrid model that bridges traditional banking stability with the efficiency of DLT.

Who Are the Founders of NatWest?

NatWest Group (formerly Royal Bank of Scotland Group) has roots dating back to 1692, but its modern blockchain initiatives are led by financial and technology veterans. Christopher Agathangelou serves as the Head of Digital Capital Markets, overseeing the bank's transition to blockchain-underpinned credit products. Lee McNabb serves as the Head of Digital Assets and Strategy, spearheading the bank's participation in international pilots and the evolution of the future of money through tokenization.
