What is Currencies Direct?

Currencies Direct is a global foreign exchange and international payment specialist established in 1996. Headquartered in London, the company's mission is to simplify international money transfers for both individuals and businesses by providing competitive exchange rates and personalized service. While primarily a traditional fintech firm, it gained recognition in the digital asset space for being an early adopter of blockchain technology for cross-border settlements.

How Does Currencies Direct Work?

Currencies Direct operates an omni-channel platform that includes an online service, a mobile app, and over 25 retail branches worldwide. The technology involves a secure digital infrastructure that allows users to hold multi-currency wallets, convert funds at real-time rates, and execute international transfers. Historically, the project successfully trialed Ripple's xRapid technology to utilize blockchain-based liquidity for near-instant cross-border payments between different fiat currencies.

What Makes Currencies Direct Unique?

Unlike many digital-only fintechs, Currencies Direct uniquely combines a robust digital platform with a physical retail presence and dedicated account managers. Key features include its multi-currency debit card that allows users to 'spend like a local' in over 200 countries, and its successful implementation of blockchain protocols for institutional-grade remittance, which drastically reduces transaction times from several days to mere seconds.

Who Are the Founders of Currencies Direct?

The project was founded in 1996 by Mayank Patel, an entrepreneur who started the business with just £8,500 after identifying a gap in the exchange rates offered to small businesses compared to large corporations. Patel grew the company into a multi-billion dollar enterprise before it was acquired by private equity firms Corsair Capital and Palamon Capital in 2015. Former Barclays CEO Antony Jenkins later served as the company's Chairman.
