About Peoples Group

What is Peoples Group?

Peoples Group is a prominent Canadian financial services institution established in 1985. In the cryptocurrency sector, it is best known for its strategic partnership with major exchanges like Coinbase to provide essential fiat-to-crypto infrastructure, such as Interac e-Transfer integrations for Canadian users. It operates as a bridge between traditional banking and the digital asset economy, focusing on fintech innovation and secure payment solutions.

How Does Peoples Group Work?

Peoples Group works by providing the underlying banking and payment infrastructure required for crypto platforms to operate legally and efficiently in Canada. Through its subsidiary, Peoples Trust Company, it facilitates 'Money Movement' services, including electronic fund transfers and prepaid card issuing. This allows users to seamlessly move fiat currency into crypto wallets and vice versa using regulated, compliant banking channels.

What Makes Peoples Group Unique?

Peoples Group is unique because it acts as a 'fintech enabler' rather than a traditional retail bank. It has carved out a niche as the leading issuer of prepaid payment cards in Canada and a primary partner for global crypto entities looking to enter the Canadian market. Its ability to navigate complex Canadian regulations while fostering innovation makes it a critical backbone for the local cryptoeconomy.

Who Are the Founders of Peoples Group?

Peoples Group was founded in 1985 and is currently a subsidiary of the Triple Five Group, a large multinational conglomerate owned by the Ghermezian family. Key leadership includes David Furlong (Chief Operating Officer) and John Landry (CEO). The executive team brings decades of expertise in regulated Canadian trust operations, commercial lending, and specialized payment technology.
