NEAR Protocol

Infra Layer1

NEAR is a sharded, proof-of-stake, layer-one blockchain that aims to incentivize a network of computers to operate a platform for developers to create and launch decentralized applications. Central to its design is the concept of sharding, a process that splits the network's infrastructure into several segments so that nodes only have to handle a fraction of the network's transactions. The NEAR mainnet went live in August 2020.

What is NEAR Protocol?

NEAR Protocol is a Layer 1 blockchain platform designed to provide a user-friendly environment for decentralized applications (DApps). Its mission is to enable developers to build scalable and secure applications with ease, fostering mass adoption of blockchain technology.

How Does NEAR Protocol Work?

NEAR employs a unique sharding mechanism called 'Nightshade' to enhance scalability by dividing the network into smaller segments, or shards. This approach allows for parallel processing of transactions, significantly increasing throughput and reducing latency. Additionally, NEAR's consensus mechanism, Thresholded Proof-of-Stake (TPoS), ensures network security and decentralization.

What Makes NEAR Protocol Unique?

NEAR stands out due to its developer-friendly environment, offering tools and resources like the NEAR Dev Hub and hosting hackathons to encourage innovation. Its compatibility with Ethereum through the 'Aurora' smart contract enables seamless migration of applications, attracting developers seeking lower fees and improved scalability. Furthermore, NEAR's focus on user-owned AI and cross-chain interoperability positions it at the forefront of blockchain innovation.

Who Are the Founders of NEAR Protocol?

NEAR Protocol was founded in 2017 by Alexander Skidanov, Illia Polosukhin, and Erick Trautman. Alexander Skidanov is a former software developer at Microsoft, Illia Polosukhin served as a technical lead at Google, and Erick Trautman is an entrepreneur with experience on Wall Street. Their combined expertise has been instrumental in shaping NEAR's development and vision.
