What is eBay?

eBay is a global commerce leader that connects millions of buyers and sellers in more than 190 markets worldwide. Founded in 1995, it facilitates consumer-to-consumer and business-to-consumer sales through its website, offering both auction-style and fixed-price trading. Its mission is to create economic opportunity for all by providing a platform where anyone can find almost anything, from rare collectibles to everyday items.

How Does eBay Work?

eBay operates as an online marketplace where sellers list items for sale and buyers place bids in auctions or purchase items instantly through the 'Buy It Now' feature. The platform manages the transaction process, including payment processing and seller protection. In the Web3 space, eBay has integrated NFT (Non-Fungible Token) trading, allowing users to buy and sell digital collectibles using traditional payment methods like credit cards and PayPal.

What Makes eBay Unique?

eBay is unique for its hybrid model of auctions and fixed-price listings, making it the premier destination for rare and hard-to-find collectibles. It has expanded its 'tech-led reimagination' by acquiring KnownOrigin, an NFT marketplace, to bridge physical and digital collecting. Unlike many crypto-native platforms, eBay allows mainstream users to enter the NFT space without needing a crypto wallet initially, as it supports fiat-based transactions for digital assets.

Who Are the Founders of eBay?

eBay was founded by Pierre Omidyar, a French-born Iranian-American computer programmer, in September 1995. Originally started as a hobby under the name 'AuctionWeb' in his San Jose living room, Omidyar grew the company alongside early partners like Jeff Skoll and later CEO Meg Whitman. Omidyar’s expertise in software development and his vision for an open, democratic marketplace laid the foundation for modern e-commerce.
