What is MIA?

MIA, primarily known as MiamiCoin, is a community-led cryptocurrency launched in August 2021 through the CityCoins protocol. It was designed to support the city of Miami by providing a novel, decentralized funding mechanism. The project's mission is to empower citizens to invest in their city's growth, with a portion of the generated revenue redirected to the city's treasury for infrastructure, education, and social programs.

How Does MIA Work?

MIA operates on the Stacks protocol, which enables smart contracts on the Bitcoin network. Users participate through a 'mining' process where they forward STX tokens (the native currency of Stacks) to a smart contract. A random selection process determines the miner who receives newly minted MIA tokens. Crucially, 30% of the STX forwarded by miners is automatically sent to a reserved wallet for the City of Miami, which can be converted to fiat for municipal use.

What Makes MIA Unique?

MIA is unique as the first 'CityCoin' in the crypto market, bridging the gap between decentralized finance and local government funding. It offers a programmable revenue stream for a city without traditional taxation. Furthermore, MIA holders can 'Stack' their tokens within the CityCoins protocol to earn yield in STX and Bitcoin, creating a symbiotic relationship between the city’s treasury and the participants.

Who Are the Founders of MIA?

MIA was developed by CityCoins, a decentralized nonprofit project. While there is no single 'founder' in the corporate sense, the initiative was spearheaded by a community of developers on the Stacks network and strongly championed by Miami Mayor Francis Suarez. Key figures associated with its early promotion include crypto investor Anthony Pompliano and city innovation officials like Michael Sarasti.
